Embarkation to Japan

O
We are in the final throws of preparations for departing Portland for 4 weeks in Japan.   We have completed most of our to do list, like stopping the newspaper and mail, getting lots of Yen, and documenting all of our travel arrangements.  Most of the trip expenses have been paid and what a trip it will be.  Our focus will be the central eastern, but will involve two different treks through areas of temples, shrines, gardens and historical inns (ryokans).

Asked what motivated this trip, I have attached the photo that Betsy found intriguing and created her desire to visit.  I have read about 300 pages of a 700 page book entitled The Making of Japan.  Its history is very different from anything we know and its cultural customs may be interesting for us.  I am hoping not to stand too much - yeah good luck on that.  I am looking forward to some great walking, interesting architecture (and woodworking), and good eating.  I will try to keep you all interested with some nice photography.  This blog allows me to insert photos next to the text, I hope.

We depart on October 14 from Portland, fly to Vancouver, BC then direct to Tokyo Narita Airport.  The long flight is 9 hours and 20 minutes.  Business class here we come.
