North Cascades Trip Day 7

September 4 - It was "multi-modal" day.  We first traveled by bicycle, then lake ferry, and ended up with automobile.

We were up early, and settled our bill with Jeannetta (Stehekin Creekside Cabin), which included gasoline payment for 45 miles of local travel in her car.  We rode off at about 8:45 am, and traveled 3 miles to the pastry company (i.e., the Bakery).  The downhill slopes were fun, even got up to 21.5 mph on one of them.  We got coffee and shared a slice of berry kuchen.  We got to the bakery just before the local shuttle bus delivered a gang of hikers; it must be nice to be the single provider of yummies in the valley.

An unusual flower in Jeannetta's garden -- a Cock's Comb.  She grew it from seeds.

A Variable Darner, a colorful dragonfly I almost stepped on just before mounting my bicycle.

We rode the remaining 3 miles to the ferry dock.  Our luggage was delivered at 10:20 by David (Jeannetta's husband) driving the loaner car.  He was collecting another guest for the creekside cabin at 11 am.  David grew up in Portland within 20 blocks of our house.

We boarded the ferry and it departed promptly 10:40 and arrived at Fields Point Landing at 12:30.  I collected the car from the parking lot, and drove it down to the loading zone.  We gathered our luggage (3 bike bags, 2 backpacks and a carryall), stowed them in the car and drove to Winthrop, by way of Chelan, then up the Columbia River to Pateros, then on to the east side towns of Methow, Twisp and Winthrop.

On the Ferry.

The view from the ferry - hillsides with deep stream cuts and sparse trees

Ditto.

We arrived about 3:00, and checked in to the Chewuch Inn and Cabins.   Then we drove back to Twisp to a laundromat, which is where I am writing this -- not a very exciting post so far and unlikely to get much better for the rest of the day.  It's another hot day so hanging out in a fly-infested laundromat is not much fun, but we needed clean clothes.

The clothes got washed and mostly dried.  Betsy said the dryers were wimpy.  After resting a bit back at the motel, we walked 5 minutes to the Fainting Goat Restaurant, for a very nice meal -- two salads, two appetizers and two desserts.  The service was swift and the accompanying sauces to the fried calamari and hushpuppies were great.  Betsy had a beet and goat cheese salad and I had peach and buratta salad with pesto on cherry tomatoes.  Betsy had blackberry gelato for dessert and I had an enormous  Pistachio Tiramisu (see photo).

It was a bit too large...

A spooky gibbous moon.
