Thursday, May 15th - This was a day of driving up and over, down, back and forth, on slow roads through the back country from Weaverville to Mendocino. It took most of the day and we saw Redwoods, a couple turkeys and deer, and lots of trees, forests actually.
The day started with a surprising, excellent breakfast from the Weaverville Hotel. It was not originally part of the plan according to our reservations, but we were invited yesterday via a text message. It was self-serve and included everything one could wish for -- juice, coffee (or tea), mini quiches, breakfast burritos, chopped melon, and carrot & raisin muffins. We talked with one other person during breakfast - a professor visiting from a university in Sonoma who was involved with forest resource and wildfire management.
The drive took about 6 hours to go a little over 200 miles on curvy, hilly roads. We went through at least 3 National Forests, and crossed several major rivers, including the Trinity, and Eel.
After arriving in Mendocino, and checking into the Headlands B&B, we walked around the town on the Headland's Bluff Trail. The photos tell the story. We covered 3 miles in brisk winds off the ocean, but the skies were blue and the sea calm - just about as good as it gets. After reaching town again, we ate at the Luna Restaurant -- salads and pasta.
Mendocino is a lovely coastal town. Not an easy drive to get to from most directions!
