Walking around Nimes

Sunday, August 18th:  A day walking around Nimes (6.3 miles and 300 verts), visiting sites we missed on our first exploration.  Sunny and comfortable.

A two-way street near our inn.   Most of the roads in our neighborhood are this narrow and almost always bordered by high stone walls.

Natural substitute for barbed wire or glass shards.

First site - the Castellum, the endpoint of the aqueduct and the start of distribution pipes to the city.

Street art.

The other side of the passageway.

Second site - Porte d'Auguste, an entrance gate in the Roman wall.

The Arena from the Matador statue, a view showing its full "breadth."

The Matador.

Third site - The next series of photos are all from inside the Musee de la Romanite.  This museum is across from the Arena and focusses on the Roman era for the city of Nimes.  The photo here shows a full-sized mosaic floor from a "rich Roman" family home.

Impressive stone carving.

An eagle holding a laurel chain.

More mosaic floors.

View from the museum to its back garden.  The path for the ancient city walls is the straight "gravel road" on the right.

The museum's logo.

We took a break in the museum's cafe for a panini and smoothies, then walked back uphill to our inn.  The swimming pool was next on our agenda, which brought the body temperatures back down.  We had dinner back at the pizza parlor that we enjoyed two nights ago.  We are getting pretty skilled in using the car's GPS system and  driving on the narrow streets.

Basilic & Co., with Ron and Jan on the left.
