May 16th: This will be a brief post covering our trek to the Rhode Island State Highpoint - Jerimoth Hill.
We met up with Catherine (again, Betsy's Sister) who took us first to Enterprise Rental Car to pickup a Toyota Camry, our car for the next week plus. She then treated us to breakfast at the King's Street Cafe, the best home fries in the area.
We returned to Catherine's condo, saying hi to the cats and dropping off her car. We then drove south in a large looping route to Jerimoth Hill, the highpoint of Rhode Island, in the northwest corner of the state. It was raining rather hard, but we only had to hike 0.1 mile for the climb up onto the "rock." Here are the only photos for the day. Total elevation for this highpoint is 812 feet.
Trail marker....
USGS marker a few hundred feet from the "rock."
The Rock!
The Rock is behind us.
The essential data.
We continued our drive in the rain passing by the Wright's Dairy Farm and Bakery. The range of baked goods, muffins, cookies, pies, and the like, was astonishing but we resisted.
We passed through numerous small villages and towns, guided by Catherine. We ultimately drove to Purgatory Chasm State Preserve. It was a well-cared-for state park, that charged for parking and since it was raining, we drove through. As it turned out the trails were mostly closed due to slippery conditions. There were lots of large rock slabs.
The rest of the day was spent reading and relaxing and waiting for the rain to stop. We took Catherine for dinner at a local distillery/restaurant - good cocktails, salads, and flat bread.
Certainly not your usual challenging climb to the top! CG
